Biography
Technically not a publisher, Petrucci is responsible for inventing a type-setting system that advanced the publication, printing and distribution of music to a wider audience. This process aided in the distribution, particularly, of polyphonic music. The printing process required three different imprints, one for the staff, one for the notes, and one for the text but his alignments were superb. After moving to Venice around 1490, he was able to establish himself and issue "Harmonice musices odhecaton" which was a collection of one hundred songs in harmony. He also printed a collection of ninety six predominantly French chansons for three and four voices composed by Agricola, Compere, Josquin and others. The first lute tablature to be printed, 1507, was accomplished by Petrucci. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
