Biography
An American singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Emily Saliers is best known as one-half of the Grammy Award-winning folk-rock/Americana duo Indigo Girls. Born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in Decatur, Georgia, Saliers befriended her future Indigo Girls partner, Amy Ray, in elementary school. By the time the two were in their mid-teens, they were performing regularly at talent shows and local venues. They began operating under the Indigo Girls moniker while attending Emory College in Atlanta. In 1987 they released their debut album, Strange Fire, independently, and the following year they landed a major-label deal with Epic. They hit their commercial stride in 1989 with their eponymous second LP and hit single "Closer to Fine," which was penned by Saliers, and Indigo Girls would go on to release nine more successful major-label outings before self-producing their LPs via their own IG Recordings company. In addition to her work with Ray, Saliers has composed film scores and co-written a book with her father. In 2017 she released her debut solo album, Murmuration Nation. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
