I've torn a page
from a fallen white sail,
I've drawn a map of the world
while legend and key
take the measure of me
and the flag I knit to unfurl.
My head in my hands,
my back to the land,
I step foot on the sea and slip under
and God laughs herself
into thunder
The stain of the sky
has bled to my hands
a tear moving through a hard letter
the words coming free
now conspire with me
a story I know I'd tell better.
Opening frames,
uncoupling names,
I rearrange all to my vision
and God laughs to herself
beyond reason
Now, who gave the dark
such power to sing,
the black bird in the heart taking over?
it came through a door,
that's locked and secure,
to scare up a song from my lover.
I've built a wall, as if it was all
I needed to hold back the hours
and God throws a laugh
from her tower
Oh soon may it come:
the surrender to only
this love, and all of its terror
may we be consumed
by the mystery this room
and fire can only make clearer.
Oh may we come clean
with all that we mean,
and all that we need now to cling to
and may God laugh with you, see you as true,
and may God see herself
within me too
