Celebrating Engineers Week 2020: Spotlight on Brad Cammon

SoundHound Inc. joins the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) in their Engineers Week celebration by throwing a spotlight on some of our inspiring engineers that are working to voice-enable our world.

Meet Brad Cammon, a senior technical program manager at our Santa Clara headquarters. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Brad is excited to be transitioning from a purely technical program manager role to one that includes more hands-on coding projects. His background as an entrepreneur and self-starter has kept his career varied and interesting. We talked to him about his journey.

Here are some of his thoughts on engineering and his career:

Q: What inspired you to take on a role in engineering?

A: I was always interested in math and science. I’m from Detroit where there is a bigger focus on mechanical engineering, since that is home to the auto industry. Although I majored in mechanical engineering, software programming was part of the curriculum and something I have always had an interest in. Since then, I’ve done some online courses in software development and was able to do some of that work in my previous jobs.

Q: Why did you join SoundHound Inc.?

A: I like that SoundHound is smaller than places I’ve worked in the past. It’s refreshing to work at a place where I know everyone and where I am able to make a bigger impact. I appreciate not being treated like a number. The management here is very encouraging and hands-on. The company is still engineering driven and that’s really interesting and different.

Q: What is your favorite part of your job at SoundHound Inc.?

A: First of all, I really like the people I work with — we manage to have a lot of fun while getting things done. They are very good teammates and people who are willing to share knowledge and teach you something new. They are also open to learning.

Secondly, managers here give people the freedom to try new things, make impactful decisions, and figure things out by themselves without micromanaging.

Q: What inspires you about your work?

A: I have an affinity for music. I’ve done some audio production as a hobby. Since I work with the SoundHound app, this job gives me an excuse to listen to music at work! It’s fun to be in that space and talk about, listen to, and work with music.

Q: If you could only listen to one genre of music what would it be?

A: Hip Hop. I must give accolades to Run DMC who really got me interested in Hip Hop as a kid. They’re like the Mount Rushmore of rap — the forefathers.

Q: What are your hobbies outside of work?

A: Right now, my five-year-old daughter is my main hobby — you know how that is! But I’d like to find more time for music production and playing the bass.

Q: If you could have one engineering superpower what would it be and why?

A: The best superpower would be to have the ability toshrink myself down to enter memory space, watch code pass by, and then to have complete control over it. Of course, I’d have the entire codebase in my head.
